Our House

The Metal. The Hands.

For four decades, our Mumbai atelier has shaped sand, sound and patience into objects that travel further than the artisans who made them.

Each piece begins with raw ingots, melted at 1,083°C, poured into hand-packed sand moulds, and surrendered to the chisel of a craftsman whose grandfather likely held the same tool.

There are no machines in the rooms that matter. Only the slow, deliberate dialogue between metal and master.

The Process

From ingot to icon.
Three rooms, three masters.

01

Casting

Raw brass melted at 1,083°C, poured into hand-packed sand moulds carved fresh for every batch. The first impression is the only one.

02

Engraving

Each piece passes to the engraver — a chisel held the same way for forty years. Motifs are not stamped. They are remembered.

03

Finishing

Polished with tamarind, lacquered to halt time, and inspected under daylight before it earns the Ashaji stamp on its base.

Patrons

Held in homes across continents.

The urli that arrived in Brooklyn last spring is the first object guests notice when they walk in. The weight of it tells you, instantly, that no machine touched it.

We've sourced from Mumbai for fifteen years. Ashaji is the only workshop that has never asked us to compromise on the engraving — and the only one we still buy from.
